The OED and even the Macquarie see the word 'family' as a singular noun and 
each proffers a plural version - families.
'Team' has similar treatments in both.

The better way is to use these words as adjectives - 'When I came home, all my 
family members were ...'

Even one million people hearing a sports announcer on the ABC using these words 
wrongly, doesn't make it right.
