Margins are usually the preserve of designers. The only standards that may 
exist are likely to be proprietary, ie, in-house for particular print houses.

Small margins are usually chosen by non-visual people, who have this strong 
belief in the absolute rationality of their readers, who only respond to verbal 
cues. Bit limiting?

Can you ask your readers what they prefer? Can you improve your dox with 
graphic images?
