atw: Re: SnagIt / Icon rendering problem

Well, Warren (L) et al,

Could also be a user login file access rights issue, if you are logging on under different user names / from an alternate workstation or saving to a network directory that, to the OS at least, ostensibly has a different registered "owner".

Try right-clicking on the folder icon from the Windows file explorer (Windows Flag key + E to run) and look at its properties / security and ownership. In my experience, this is an especially prevalent issue with networked XP machines in a very locked down / tightly regulated user desktop environment. Often you need local PC administrator rights to work effectively sharing files in such a low-faith-in-employee-integrity environment or you cannot reuse the files you created when saved to a distant folder.

My solution: work locally, saving to the drives within your PC and backup globally each night before PC log out.

Hope that helps.

That said, Vista is about the best advert for the modern Mac ever. But then, obvious technical superiority and utterly brilliant OS and hardware design rarely win out over massive marketing clout and entrenched global anti-competitive business practices, As is evidenced by the 21 year old Motorola 68000 based Amiga 500 I pulled out of the cupboard yesterday at the request of my 16 year old daughter, sick of my XP PC. 1mb of RAM, 2X880kb DSDD floppy drives, yet still intuitive, quick, responsive, dynamic and a delight to use. I remember running Mac on my overclocked Amiga 2000HD with a Mac board - twice as fast or half as slow as what it was emulating!

Vista is simply a black hole that feeds on infinite system resources. Don't be sucked in by the pretty user Interface, if it ever loads.

Cheers,

Micky G.

Are you on Vista? This sounds suspiciously similar to conflicts caused by incompatible video card drivers and Vista. Another issue may be the file type you are saving to. I have had surprises with .png files too. Jpg and bmp files are more reliable.

I am avoiding Vista like the plague. People, hate to say it, but Apple is now looking REALLY good. I am probably going to go with an Apple in the next few months. I will let everyone know how it pans out.
