I remember Rob McKilliam mentioning this topic on a training course he ran
about 10 - 15 years ago.
His problem was that people from around the world and from different states
but all in the mining industry referred to "the thing" by a variety of
jargon terms, all correct but quiet inconsistent.
His solution was to have large exploded diagams with the standard name on
each part.
He mentioned Catapillar and how they went to a single set of terms, and this
was to make transalation easier.
I have been trying to set a single set of terms at the place where I am
currently working, and the all in brawls have been fun. The old documents
had a variety of terms for the same item, up to five variations on the one
page. I am not making this up.
