Possibly for changing the margins on a single page. I have demonstrated this
by formating page two with a very wide right hand margin to allow an area for
annotations, or to display the contents of a page as a narrow column in the
central area of the page.

Guys, bear with me for another apparently dumb question.
Is there any reason why you would use a section break in a short document?
The competencies for the Word course I am writing require me to cover Section
Breaks, but nowhere in the course do I have a document long enough to warrant
sections. The competencies do not require table of contents or index,
different headers and footers, forcing odd or even pages at the start of
genuine sections etc. Any ideas?
Regards
Christine
