In many cases, they can also significantly reduce the translation /
localisation effort and therefore its cost.

Using screen grabs wisely / sparingly can also make a document more
accessible to a wider audience and enhance its usability.

Overkill, however, can be just that and inhibit readability.

That said, I'm also a big fan of using screen captured icons in the text,
such as in an instruction like:
1. Click [pic]
The such and such screen displays.

Yes of course. Selected screen shots with callouts should cut out a significant amount of the verbiage in your 450 page document. If you do it right it should even lower your page count.
