Howard and now Warren (and all who posted earlier on and off list) - I
totally agree it sounds funny and you've hit on what it was that I thought
was wrong with it! Especially about the negative connotations.
I'm sorry I couldn't quote more of the doc or give more background, but
you've all given me plenty to work with and enough reasoning for my
rephrasing, thank you. I'll have to lurk now so I can get the doc finished.
Thanks again,
Erica.
PS. You may be interested to know that the doc was written by a native
French speaker who spent a few years in the States. :o) Bill Hall's post
about international english is quite timely. Ooh la la!! It's a
noodle-western!

To me, 'western based' (or 'western-based') is a term that might make sense
for a movie. In any other context, 'western' is an adjective, and tacking
'-based' on it makes no sense at all. Since 'west' is a noun, you *could*
write 'west-based' (meaning 'based in the west'), and I suspect that's what
the original author really started to write, but he or she probably thought
it sounded funny. It does sound funny - but changing 'west' to 'western'
does nothing to fix it!
