that problem seems to happen if you delete or otherwise fiddle with the
para mark before the x ref or the one at the end of the para (assuming
the x-ref is to a heading) - eg if you stick the cursor in at the
beginning of the para and press enter, to create a new para above, or if
you create a new para after the heading by pressing enter from the end
of the heading. if you see what I mean.
when you do that, I think you are entering stuff inside the bookmark,
and that's what's causing the problem. and of course, a lot of the
x-refs in word are invisible bookmarks.
when I've made an effort not to type inside the para marks around
something I am x-reffing to, I have had no problems.
and I'm loving the googleearth, I've found my house, my mother's house,
my next holiday location...

Subject: atw: SEC: UNCLASS Cross-referencing in Word (with aside
onGoogleEarth)
For years I've cursed about Word's propensity to expand its own
cross-reference bookmarks so that a cross-reference like "See Figure 5"
suddenly incorporates the whole of Figure 5 itself as well as the
intended words "Figure 5" from the caption, or a cross-reference to a
heading suddenly contains reams of extra text from an adjoining
paragraph. (I'm sure anyone who's used Word's cross-references will know
what I'm talking about.) I've often wondered if there was a way of
preventing this unseemly behaviour but until now I've always just reset
the bookmark to its proper target and silently prayed that this time it
will behave.
However, I've now decided that these quirky references have made me
cross enough (should I call them livid-references?). Does anyone out
there know how to handle them - apart from simply avoiding the feature
altogether? I couldn't find any advice in the usual Word websites.
Oh yes, and I have to agree with Stuart about GoogleEarth! Even though
I'm not normally a technology addict like some of my colleagues, I have
to admit to an extra slow start this morning after sitting up till all
hours last night with my son exploring satellite views of our relatives'
and friends' houses. We even thought we could see our old car sitting on
the nature strip of our own house! Seriously freaky!
