Elizabeth picked your problem.
A suggestion for preventing unwanted extraneous-ness insertion and general
confusion en-masse with cross reference fields:
1. Be in an open Word document.
2. View > Normal. Now go to: Tools > Options.
3. Check the "Field codes" tick box.
4. In "Field Shading:", select 'Always'.
5. Click "OK". Voile. You can see the slippery little suckers.
You should be viewing "All" in Word documents too. That is a very handy
help, although I am sure you have already found that little darling. Also
of course, the style area width selection. God Love It.
