Sorry Christine, but I cannot leave your comment "Frame is also
extraordinarily slow and clunky to work with compared to Word, so once you
get used to the workarounds for the Word issues - and there are lots - Word
is a much faster tool to use" unanswered because this is simply not accurate
in any typical documentation environment.

I hate to sound like an evangelist or defender of the faith BUT I have been
using Word for over 13 years now and have also been using FrameMaker (FM)
since around 1997 and FM is NOT slow or clunky, and certainly not when
compared to Word. While not perfect, FM is robust and reliable and the
numbering and joining of seperate documents into book files is a breeze.

With Word, I have found the master/sub-document environment virtually
useless (admittedly I haven't tried it in my latest version of Word) and
have found around 500 pages to be the limit before there are major issues.
With FM, I have never found a limit and have had dozens of documents
containing hundreds of graphics and thousands of pages open at the same
time, but for those wanting more than just my opinion, look in the archives
as there is plenty of info on the topic in there (try Word -v- FrameMaker).

As for the future, well that IS another question (again, read the archives)
but until FM dies (or is replaced by something better than Word), it will be
my tool of choice. Maybe the next few years will see a shift in paradigm
where AuthorIT or some other tool becomes the new tool of choice.

Cheers,

Bruce

not necessarily a good idea to go with Frame, given it is no longer being
developed. Unless things have changed since last I knew, Frame is pretty
much history, so you will have to become an expert on Word at some stage
anyway - might as well be now.

Frame is also extraordinarily slow and clunky to work with compared to Word,
so once you get used to the workarounds for the Word issues - and there are
lots - Word is a much faster tool to use. Numbering, and to a much lesser
extend, large document handling, are the two big issues for me with Word,
and there are satisfactory, if annoying, workarounds for both.

Thanks everyone (Michael, Donald, Rhonda, Christine, Warren, and Peter) for
your helpful replies.

I will tread very carefully with this ‘simple’ project… and continue to
keep pressure on management to convert to Frame J

Cheers
