atw: Re: Public liability and professional indemnity insurance

As a techwriter, you should be able to get out of having PI insurance. I've never needed to get it. The catch with it is that you need to maintain it for 5 years beyond the end of the contract. The reason you don't need it is that you're not designing things and the people who are designing these things are the ones who should be proofing and approving your work. Speak with the people offering you the contract. If they insist, factor in five additional years worth of PI into your rate. Rhonda is right that you should expect somewhere around $3-4k/year for $20M cover. $15-20k over five years is better in your pocket than in some insurance company's.

When I've had PI for project management work, I think I had a Vero policy (would need to check) through a local broker.

The PL should be of the order $500/year.

Cheers,
Terry

Hi John

Mine PI is through CGU via a business insurance broker in Perth. It's
not cheap, mostly because since Sept 11 2001 there are very few insurers
who offer it (at least, that's what I've been told the past few years).
My annual premium is just under $3K (not including the poxy WA Stamp
Duty!)

Public liability is much easier to come by - you should find that most
of the major insurance companies offer it. It's much cheaper than PI,
and you may find you can bundle them together.

If you need further details, contact me directly and I'll give you my
broker's details. However, any business insurance broker (or CGU direct)
should be able to sort this out for you.

Rhonda

Subject: atw: Public liability and professional indemnity insurance

Good day,

As a sole trader I am required to cover myself for public liability and
professional indemnity for a 6 month job. This is a condition of
accepting the contract. Does anyone out there have such insurance, and
can you recommend insurers or brokers? What rates can I expect to pay?

cheers

John Brooke
