atw: Re: Process Vs Procedure

I think for many of us Information Mapping has set the standard.
procedure is done by one person at one sitting
process is a number of procedures done over time or by more than one
person.

I think this is fairly standard. However, there are often several layers
of process to confuse the issue.

The big bug from my point of view is 'Work Instruction' that seems to be
used interchangebably for both process and procedure, and no-one seems to
have a set an industry standard for it.

All

I have been given the task of documenting a lot of the operations at
Unisys. One of my colleagues has very strong views on the meaning of
"process" and "procedure" and that they are totally different. I have
checked out the dictionary definitions and the definition given leaves
it open to discretion on what these 2 words mean. (www.dictionary.com)

My understanding of is that a document that covers the "process" would
be cover the aspects of the operation at a high level (birds eye view -
not too much detail) and a document that covers the "procedure" would
cover the operation in a granular, step by step way.=20

What are your thoughts on "process" documentation versus "procedure"
documentation? Would you agree or disagree with my understanding? What
other terminology could be used as a substitute to either of these
words?

Thanks
Josh
