atw: Re: Process Vs Procedure

Process usually covers a whole activity for achieving an
objective; it may involve several operators and machines,
eg, marketing a new product.
Procedure is usually the set of steps that one person
follows to execute a single task, eg, producing a sales
invoice.

  All

I have been given the task of documenting a lot of the operations at
Unisys. One of my colleagues has very strong views on the meaning of
"process" and "procedure" and that they are totally different. I have
checked out the dictionary definitions and the definition given leaves
it open to discretion on what these 2 words mean. (www.dictionary.com)

My understanding of is that a document that covers the "process" would
be cover the aspects of the operation at a high level (birds eye view -
not too much detail) and a document that covers the "procedure" would
cover the operation in a granular, step by step way.=20

What are your thoughts on "process" documentation versus "procedure"
documentation? Would you agree or disagree with my understanding? What
other terminology could be used as a substitute to either of these
  words?

  Thanks
  Josh
