atw: Re: Process Vs Procedure

Hi,

I'm just trying to figure this out myself, as I'm reading Kurt Ament's
book "Single Sourcing: Building Module Documentation".

For him, a procedure is the step-by-step instructions that explain how to
perform a task. A process is similar, but is formed as a narrative rather
than an imperative. A process explains what someone or something does, not
what a user should do.

Hope this helps,
KT

Subject
atw: Process Vs Procedure

All

I have been given the task of documenting a lot of the operations at
Unisys. One of my colleagues has very strong views on the meaning of
"process" and "procedure" and that they are totally different. I have
checked out the dictionary definitions and the definition given leaves
it open to discretion on what these 2 words mean. (www.dictionary.com)

My understanding of is that a document that covers the "process" would
be cover the aspects of the operation at a high level (birds eye view -
not too much detail) and a document that covers the "procedure" would
cover the operation in a granular, step by step way.=20

What are your thoughts on "process" documentation versus "procedure"
documentation? Would you agree or disagree with my understanding? What
other terminology could be used as a substitute to either of these
words?

Thanks
Josh
