atw: Re: Process Vs Procedure

Here's the Webopedia definitions, I don't know if they will
help clarification -

Process
(n) An executing program. The term is used loosely as a
synonym of task.
(v) To perform some useful operations on data.

Procedure
(1) Same as routine, subroutine, and function. A procedure
is a section of a program that performs a specific task.
(2) An ordered set of tasks for performing some action.

I have been given the task of documenting a lot of the
operations at Unisys. One of my colleagues has very strong
views on the meaning of "process" and "procedure" and that
they are totally different. I have checked out the
dictionary definitions and the definition given leaves it
open to discretion on what these 2 words mean.

My understanding of is that a document that covers the
"process" would be cover the aspects of the operation at a
high level (birds eye view - not too much detail) and a
document that covers the "procedure" would cover the
operation in a granular, step by step way.=20

What are your thoughts on "process" documentation versus
"procedure" documentation? Would you agree or disagree with
my understanding? What other terminology could be used as a
substitute to either of these words?

Thanks
Josh
