Hi Al,
I had a similar problem when trying to convert a large Word docs to .pdf
using Acrobat 5.5 (on W2000 and XP).
The problem seemed to be centred around the conversion of the links and
cross-references. I found if I turned off the Tagged PDF selection, I
was able to eventually create a .pdf with the embedded links.=20
However, some were far too large and I ended up using the same work
around as you have described.
The problems disappeared when I loaded Adobe Acrobat 6.0.=20
