Yes, 'opus' does work this way. But our word 'opera' for a musical/dramatic
entertainment come to us circuitously via Italian, I think.

The Latin word 'opera' appears in the semi-famous palindrome
SATOR
AREPO
TENET
OPERA
ROTAS
which is rather contrived, but seems to mean 'Arepo the sower thinks that
wheels are hard work'. Hauling vehicles, perhaps. I wonder whether there's
an English language square that, like this one, reads forwards, backwards,
up and down?
