atw: Re: Part-time contracting question

Marcus,

I think that what you do should reflect your long-term plans. If you =
plan to
stay an employee at Tower (presuming that is what you are) then there
probably are no real advantages in setting up a company. As Carole =
said, you
have to meet a variety of different criteria before you can be =
considered
'self-employed'.

If you see yourself doing more freelance work, and can be sure that at =
least
20% of your income will not come from one employer (and there are =
several
other criteria) it may be worth thinking about. I am not a company, but =
a
Sole Trader, registered for GST, and it suits my purposes.=20

I think a sniff around the ATO website and a talk to an accountant with
experience in this field is very worthwhile. You may also consider =
using one
of the contractor brokers (not the body shops) - can't remember the name
offhand of the one I spoke to). Often they can give you useful advice =
even
if you don't use them.
