atw: Re: Particular past tense

Well said, Michael.

When I was teaching at a university in the UK, faced with some very
bright kids who thought truth = majority rule, I used to tell them about
a well known soap manufacturer's product.

The particular soap product was claimed to produce whiter washes.
And it did. But it was not bio-degradable - in fact, it was biocidal.
When expelled from thousands of washing machines into the River
Thames, it killed all the fish there for over a generation. I used to cap
this observation with the comment:

"Who said a hundred thousand housewives can't be wrong?"

Nowadays, I'ld be pilloried for saying it - no matter that it was the truth.

Regards,
Brian
