The pseudo-decimal numbering system 1.1.1, etc, was invented by the
Italian mathematician Guiseppe Peano (1858-1932), and used by him in
a textbook published around 1905.
The earliest use that I know of in an English-language publication
was in the second edition of G.H. Hardy's "A Course of Pure
Mathematics" (Oxford, 1914, and probably still in print).

We talked about page numbering last week but I'd like to ask about
paragraph numbering.
Does anyone know of any research or documentation into para
numbering, particularly using the 1.1.1. kind of structure?
