atw: Re: PC protection

Most of the attempted hacks my extensively protected (routers, firewalls
and antivirus s/w) home system has to deal with are fellow bigpond
subscribers connected to the whole bigpond server network. Most of them
are all on the subscriber side, not the internet. I don't know how it
happens. Bigpond deny it of course. But you can see it.
Be careful that the networked isp you are going to use is not similar in
set-up to bigpond. In that case, if you have no firewall, and antivirus,
you'll be hacked for sure.

The router dramatically improved matters though, and if you can afford to,
I highly recommend using one. They are not entirely secure however.
Hackers can still punch holes through them. And some can be fiddly to
configure if you are doing network connections to different types of o/s.

Allan is correct, the last few Norton versions are a bit clunky and
inclined to use system resources. Configuring the latest version of
firewall etc is much better, and the configuration of scans and updates if
you can leave your boxes connected is a good way to go. Symantec may be
getting careless about testing too, bugs are appearing more frequently.

Warren.
