Cannot imagine why your firewall would slow anything down, Allan (C).
They either block, allow or ask re. letting things through.
Methinks it might be an ISP based or PC Internet settings problem that
you have encountered.
If it is a once off, check with your ISP's support people. (Perhaps
network congestion during a peak period reducing access bandwidth and
ISP server speed.)
On some ADSL / Cable Internet plans, once you have reached a monthly
download limit, ISPs cut back your transfer speed to dialup levels, rather
than charge you for extra megabytes beyond what is allowed in your plan.
So you still retain a connection but become a mere mortal again, in terms
of connection speeds.
That might very well be the cause of your "problem".
Otherwise, you might have encountered a new piece of spyware that is
sucking bandwidth.
(Time to update the AdAware signature file and re-scan your PC.)
That aside, please tell me your Web browser wasn't running in the
background at the time, trying to display a Flash Player based Web site or
downloading a big file, taking the bandwidth from your E-mail tool, or
that the E-mail that you were sending or receiving had a file attachment.
HTH.
