Well Warren (L),
I had the good fortune (or good sense?) to install Norton Systemworks for
Windows 98 and 98 SE, without its Norton antivirus, as I already had Vet
on my PC and, apart from its idiotic Norton System Doctor, which
continuously monitors for possible crashes and sucks so much of the life
out of one's PC whilst doing so that it causes major crashes by itself
(which I promptly disabled before it totally disabled my PC) I have to say
that their maintenance and repair tools have been an absolute godsend.
Just be sure to turn off the Norton System Doctor monitoring for starters
and things will speed up considerably.
Of course, if you have Windows ME (the Masochists' Edition) nothing on
this Earth can help you with that and many faults that we tend to blame
on our software packages are purely down to that OS. Time to upgrade
to Windows XP Pro or "retrograde" (for an absolutely massive increase
in software speed and system performance) to Windows 98 SE (full
install CD only). Never rely on the cheaper and incomplete "upgrade"
discs. Use only the full install package and completely obliterate
Windows ME in the process. The only way to ensure a reliable post ME
changeover. IMNSHO that OS is a virus in itself!
But if you use the Norton tools (Isn't Symantec now part owned by
Microsloth? Perhaps explaining the recent bloating and inefficiency of
the new Norton tools.) with something else instead of their so called
"Internet Security" package, you should be fine. Don't throw the baby
out with the bath water!
HTH.
Cheers,
Michael Granat
