atw: Re: PC protection

Hi Erisa (L)

You might have missed (re firewalls) what I wrote in my earlier post on
this topic:

>As for software firewalls, I've said it many times: Sygate! (Even the
>freeware version is Superb.)

Just upgraded to the latest version and it is still superb, having made no
noticeable degradation of the performance of my Windows 98 Second
Edition operating environment home PC with an AMD K6 3D 512mHz CPU
and 160mb of RAM (plus 196,608kb of swap file cache).

BTW, installed AdAware on a friend and former neighbour's 1.2gHz
Celeron CPU 256mb RAM XP Home PC the other night., which was running
very weirdly (sometimes fast then suddenly slow due to suspected
spyware bandwidth poaching) on the Internet. AdAware found and
removed 370 pieces of spyware, speeding things up considerably.

Then noticed that their Vet installation hadn't allowed itself to update
since January (methinks it was an "evaluation" version) so downloaded
the Grisoft free home AVG antivirus, uninstalled Vet, installed AVG,
which did a surprisingly prompt scan (considering the large size of the
drives) and got rid of one virus. Then I reconnected, installed Sygate
Personal Firewall, rebooted the PC and trained the firewall whilst using
their various Internet software packages.

A few hours off effort, for sure, over a dialup connection but, as a
consequence, they have one very happy little home PC, plus I have
taught their 12 year old son "Administrator" to keep happy.

So there you go.
Lavasoft AdAware anti-spyware. AVG antivirus. Sygate Personal Firewall.
All free, all fabulous, all efficient (non-bloatware) software.
...and so easy to install and use that even a Technical Communicator can
use them and show a 12 year old how to maintain them.

(Information on the other software in my earlier post to Allan Charlton.)

HTH.

Cheers,

Michael Granat
