I know that the _free_ versions of
1) Zone alarm firewall
http://www.zonelabs.com/
2) AVG antivirus
http://www.grisoft.com
and
3) Spybot
http://www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html
work well for many people.
All have an automatic update mechanism. However, we all know that
nothing beats checking for updates, manually, at least once a day.
