I believe the OLPC project is to be expanded but initially it is only
intended for 3rd world countries. Intel have also introduced a similar
project.

As for the implications, Asus recently brought out the Eee laptop that
costs $500. It completely sold out in Australia and in the US. It too
uses Linux (Xandros). So there appears to be a market for a small,
cheap, portable computer that just works out of the box. Crackers have
ported Windows XP to it and Asus apparently have XP drivers for it. I am
puzzled by this given that you cannot buy a stand-alone XP license any
more.
