I'm afraid I appear to have written the second paragraph above under the
influence of brain fever. It must be Friday.
Let me put that another way:
The justified text example appears in my browser with filling between words in
excess of two normal spaces.
(Other browsers may be different.) If that is possible or likely, it suggests
a greater problem lies with justification than with spaces inserted at the end
of a sentence.
