I'm with you, Peter.
Given that current research is increasingly showing the importance of
space in readability, I wonder why anyone would NOT want to have more
space between sentences than within them (in the same way that we have
more vertical space between paragraphs than within them).
What's the problem?

Having hacked a few document parsers, I'd have thought that having
two spaces between sentences would be more useful than not.
Is there really any sensible practical reason why there should be a
rule to limit sentence spacing to one space ? Don't see that it's
likely to produce any greater legibility or increase comprehension....
