atw: Re: Odd Word before/after spacing issue

Well Garry (S)

A bit hard to tell from a remote location, but I'll
give it a try.

First, I hope that we are talking off the same sheet,
literally, and are either looking at printed output from
the same device at the same settings or at PDFs displayed
on the same monitor at the same zoom size, also generated
at the same Distiller settings.

It is also very easy to be confused by the Word page
display, if you are viewing at different zooms or in
different modes (Normal, Web Layout, Print Layout, Outline
Markup, split screen / page, Print Preview).

The page rendering can be clunky, especially if you have
been running Word for a few hours or the system resources
are getting low (too many other applications open).

Sometimes Page Up / Page Down will refresh the screen and
change how things look at a given point in the document.

Sometimes, the PC simply needs a reboot.

Some other considerations also come to mind:
1. Page sizing.
(Is one document US Letter, the other A4 or portrait /
landscape.) Use of US Imperial / Metric pages could be
making a difference as could the way Word renders things
on screen.

2. Language set.
(Things keep defaulting to US English and can influence
other settings, like margins and sizing.)

Select all and set the Language from Tools > Language >
Set language... then double-click English (Australian).

That might help.

Also select the text in each and look go Format >
Paragraph... and verify that the line spacing is identical.

Logically, things like this should show up in the style
description but, in the real world, you might like to
check this stuff manually.

Final consideration, were both docs created on the same PC
with the same version of Word, with the same version of the
same installed font set and same flavour or service pack of
Microsloth WinDoze?

Maybe one of the two doc files even originated from Word
for the Slackintosh and used real (non UnTrueType) fonts!

Who knows!

HTH.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi All:

I must be missing something obvious. I have two Word docs, same template (styles updated). I've meticulously checked the styles on each, and the definitions are identical.

But the vertical spacing differs between the two docs on every style. So doc A has Body Text with so-and-so spacing before and after, font size, etc. Body Text is identically defined in doc B. But in both print and screen the paragraphs in one are spaced more widely than the other.

I've checked the fonts, the style tree, whether something was wrong with Normal.. everything I can think of. No overrides are in effect. This is no great impediment to my work, but I'm dying to find out why this is happening.

Any suggestions?

Garry
