Taxi drivers here in Perth are a greedy bunch, I was laden with shopping
in the city once, and I thought I'd get a taxi home ( about 5 mins away
) instead of lugging six bags of sometimes pointy food in the 35 degree
heat.=20
Unfortunately for me, the taxi driver I got demanded a $5 tip before we
took off because my house was too close.. He said it wasn't worth his
time and I should just walk, never mind the 35 degree heat and the fact
that the bags almost weighed more than me. No wonder they are victimized
so often.

It's probably just a Melbourne/Sydney problem. To be completely
politically
incorrect, it depends which ethnic group/s have taken over the taxi
business
in that area. There are men who believe that you are bringing shame on
your
family if you are out without a man after dark, and according to their
culture, they are fulfilling their moral responsibility by reprimanding
you
and demanding to know where your man is. They just don't get it that we
make our own decisions and that their behaviour feels highly
inappropriate
and menacing to us. There needs to be a cultural component added to the
taxi driving qualifications to protect us from this.
I never had a problem with Gold Coast and Canberra taxi drivers.

Gee, I've never heard of problems with taxi-drivers (apart from them
taking you the long way round) and I find it rather alarming.
One of my flatmates amazes me by riding his bike to the airport - about
a 20 min ride which is about the same as by car. He just went on a 3
week trip to the UK. It took him about 15 minutes to throw a few clothes
into a backpack, he then set off on an old bike he doesn't really care
about losing, parked it at the airport and then hopped on it again on
his way home.
Regards,
Petra
