Oh, I don't know if that is too big a barrier. In "Sweet Thursday" John
Steinbeck described how a madam married one of her girls off to a
college professor, despite her background. She simply trained the girl
to repeat the last three words of whatever he said. Of course, life was
much simpler in post-war Monterey.
