atw: Re: [OT] TEFL teacher looking for examples of good English

The Economist used to be a model of clear explanatory writing on science
and business. I haven't read it for a while (and I've heard it's 'gone off'
a little recently) but it's worth looking through the articles at
http://www.economist.com/index.html, in particular the Science & Technology
section and the Finance & Economics section.

STC competition winners should include many examples of good writing. The
hard part would be getting hold of them--not all will be available online.
Your friend's student could look through the lists of winners at
http://www.stc.org/comp/internationalCompetitions01_winners_ITPC.asp

... and try searching online for the name of the publications online.

E. B. White's essay An Approach to Style, both in what it says and how it
says it:
