Well, Stuart,

I'd say you got it substantively correct in your
Readers Digest abridged version (sh!t, do they use an
apostrophe in 'readers' and, if so, do they have only
the one reader, or more than one?).

However, I feel your summary is a wee too brief. In
this case, I did read a little more into it. To me,
authority to *give* flowers seems to be dependent on
correct gender assignments on Fridays, too.
