atw: Re: OT: Musical ignorance

OT as this may be, I'm just having a quiet lunch-break read, and my book
has just described a wedding at which at klezmer band is playing. So
this was a very timely discussion!

Klezmer is a style of music originating in eastern Europe.
Time signature is 2/4 with the emphasis on the 2nd beat (though of
course it=20
may be written as 4/4 if so, then the emphasis is on the 3rd beat)
Ska music uses the same beat, but it's a variation on the feel.
Lyrics are likely to be in Yiddish, but not necessarily.
Arguably, Zorba the Greek is similar to Klezmer, also Midnight in
Moscow. =20
Hava Nagila is another. The Andrews sisters song "Bah Meer bis Du
shein"=20
are also examples (I bet I have spelt that wrong!). However, this song
is=20
perhaps watered down from the original style, in which the off beat is
more=20
heavily accented.
A feature of this music is that it may start slow, with each verse
slightly=20
faster than the last arriving at a frantic pace by the end of the song.
Another feature is the tendency to have sudden a heavily emphatic pause
on a=20
4th minor chord (or a chord one semitone up) at the end of a verse
leading=20
to the start of a new round.
Also the melodic lines often have middle eastern sounding twirls.
The principle of Klezmer is that it is a living art, and new
compositions=20
should be continually written. Cat Empire have some Klezmer on their
album.
I have played this music in Melbourne, with a Klezmer saxophonist.
Melbourne has some very good Klezmer bands. A violin works well with it

also.  (and Tuba for bass)
