Given you can download ABC radio articles and interviews, do they work
like a walkman, and that would mean I could take my music collection with
me without the room taken up by CD's?

Yes - but they are much smaller and lighter than a walkman. The amount of music
you can take depends on how much memory you have. 64MB will hold about a CD's
worth of mp3's, 6GB will hold more than you'd probably want to listen to (or
pay for). You can use the space to transfer/store data as well as music.

Do they work in all conditions?
Yes, as far as I am aware - I've never had any problems.

And how much battery do they use?
Depends if they are rechargeable or not. IPod's are rechargeble - up to ?12
hours I believe. My little USB stick flash type player with earphones is good
for 5 hours or so listening on one AAA battery. Or you can plug it into a USB
slot on your PC and listen forever.

How resilient are they to outdoor use conditions?
I hang mine around my neck and it only weighs as much as the battery in it, so
you could protect it fairly easily.

Do they require kid gloves or can they take a reasonable shake and bump?
Flash memory ones are fairly hardy, although my son recently had a USB stick
(extra cheap) that just died on him. The IPod ones are hard drives and do not
react well to bumps and thumps. You can use the USB ones jogging but not an
IPod I believe. IPods just look better.

I think the good thing is the way you can download so much interesting stuff to
listen to, and not be chained to a radio or the box - I listen to a fair bit of
AM radio - not such an issue with FM I suppose.
For example, BBC4 recently broadcast the entire works of Beethoven over a period
of a week or so, and a lot of it was downloadable - limited 7 day licence for
private use. I just found out about that event at the tail end of the week
unfotunately, but they are planning another of these events for Bach at the end
of the year. And for a small subscription you can get rss feeds from the New
Yorker, the Guardian and other journals etc if you're so inclined. Provides a
bit of balance to the local newspaper fare if you feel the need.

Flash memory and blogs just make my head spin - things move so quickly in this
day and age its hard to keep up. And don't get me started on Skype - yet
another fantastic innovation - like ICQ with sound.
