I agree with you, Howard. We should participate in the democratic process
and stay informed. It is healthy to question the government. A vibrant
democracy is noisy with dissent. The opposite would be Nazi Germany of the
30s, where outwardly all was kept harmonious.
I don't like to get sucked into journalism's negative view of the world,
though. A recent example: The media reported widespread shootings in New
Orleans after the hurricane. People were getting murdered and raped at the
astrodome. Reporters should be embarrassed now, because that was wildly
exaggerated.
Another example: We are left with the impression that crime is rising. The
opposite is true; it's been falling for years due to population
demographics.

there seem to be many people
intent on discouraging citizen participation and willing to go to any
lengths to keep us from questioning the Government's actions. I for one
don't want to leave our children a totalitarian society where dissent is
crushed and social equity is allowed to fade away.
It's hard work informing yourself and you're right to point out the
dangers
of getting overwhelmed by it. But I've found it can also be satisfying to
feel I'm a participant in the community where I live, and the prospect of
seeing it become a society where everyone has to conform and know his or
her
place is too awful to take seriously.
