Thanks for your response to my post. It seems to me you've swung from one
extreme to the other. Yes, the media definitely create hype around their
stories and it's good to be selective and not let yourself be drawn into the
unnecessary drama - and to remember that there's more to life than our human
creations. I used to get a reminder of that when I used to climb up a hill
near where I used to live here in Canberra and look down on the source of
all that hot air, contrasting it with the peaceful atmosphere of nature
around me.

But on the other hand we do live in a democracy and at present, as MHT (is
that what you want us to call you?) says, there seem to be many people
intent on discouraging citizen participation and willing to go to any
lengths to keep us from questioning the Government's actions. I for one
don't want to leave our children a totalitarian society where dissent is
crushed and social equity is allowed to fade away.

It's hard work informing yourself and you're right to point out the dangers
of getting overwhelmed by it. But I've found it can also be satisfying to
feel I'm a participant in the community where I live, and the prospect of
seeing it become a society where everyone has to conform and know his or her
place is too awful to take seriously.
