Arnold, could I ask you to expand on your post? In four short sentences,
you make a number of unsupported assertions. There may be some truth in
them - and I'm sure you have personal concerns that caused you to make
them. Why not tell us about them? Otherwise you might just as well say,
in ringing tones, THE WORLD *IS* FLAT and then wonder why your
'argument' is convincing no-one. 

(If anyone thinks this discussion is out of place on this list, I'd
suggest that the work of a tech writer is about communication and that
this sort of discussion does have some relevance. I'm happy to say more
on request.)

On a totally different topic, some of you may recall my recent post
mentioning the wording of a notice in one of our lifts. Well,
ironically, yesterday I was forced to spend almost an hour trapped in
one of those lifts! I had plenty of time to reread that notice ad
nauseam and even to try out the procedure it described. Yes, the
procedure did work - but it didn't warn me that the Otis Hotline just
puts you into another call centre queue (though I don't think they
actually said 'Your call is important to us'). The experience didn't
change my mind, but it sure made the topic come to life! (And it has
left me with an hour's work to catch up on. Not to mention numerous
phone calls to find out about the building owners' policy on lift
maintenance and why it didn't work.)
