Yes, I do something similar. I remain aware of important events through my
choice of media and those around me, rather than avoiding news altogether as
that's not helpful to me nor the world.

I find that if something important happens, people tell me about it. So I
don't actually remain out of touch.
The Waco, Texas standoff and the O.J. Simpson murder trial were very big
news here. Yet I remained blissfully unaware of them. I didn't consider them
important enough to think about.
