1. It becomes all too easy to end up with a "head in the
  sand" / denial attitude if you cut off all news.

I find that if something important happens, people tell me about it. So I don't actually remain out of touch.

The Waco, Texas standoff and the O.J. Simpson murder trial were very big news here. Yet I remained blissfully unaware of them. I didn't consider them important enough to think about.
