Well Arnold H and Tracy J-L,
1. It becomes all too easy to end up with a "head in the
sand" / denial attitude if you cut off all news.
2. Yes, Tracy, ABC (Australia) and SBS TV are far less
histrionic in their presentation than the commercial /
cable networks, but you still need a balance of news
from different sources to enable you to determine
the inevitable bias, PR and propoganda that creeps in.
I wholeheartedly recommend ABC Australia local AM radio
news and current affairs as a mainstay that, if you are
reading this from a locale that is out of range of their
transmitters, you can still listen to by streaming audio
over the Web. (Many ABC TV and radio shows also have
interview transcripts available the next day.)
See the links to ABC Radio National, ABC Local Radio and
ABC NewsRadio at <http://www.abc.net.au/radio/> for more.
Strangely enough, for those of us fortunate enough to be
in Australia, I also wholeheartedly recommend the Austext
Teletext news, available from any teletext equipped TV or
digital TV set top box, as a background feature on
Channel 7.
It offers up to 15 pages of:
* Australian local news from page 120;
* international news from page 140, and;
* sports news from page 160.
All straight off the wire services and a very good read
(apart from the occasional typo or reception glitch).
Give it a try.
...and for those skeptics or otherwise among us who want a
daily chortle or lifestyle reference check, see page 606
for the inscrutable predictions of "Kisha" re your Stars.
HTH.
Cheers,
Michael
