Creating and re-creating hysteria around the boogieman is a very effective method of control. The boogieman used to be "Communism" and the "coldwar", but that got a bit road worn over the years. Terrorism has been far more effective and excuses a world of sins.
Only goes to show that is a big dis-service to adopt anything from the current American mind set. I understand that your government has been toying with the idea of dumping universal medical coverage in favor of the American system.
BIG BIG mistake. Don't let them get away with it. Your entire culture, with the exception of the wealthy, will suffer for it.
