Hi Diana
Regarding agencies, they change all the time with takeovers and staff
movements, so an agency that is good today is lousy tomorrow. I have
found that the best way to get onto all of their lists is to apply for
everything vaguely suitable on SEEK and Career One (this often has
different jobs to SEEK) and all the rest of the lists (if you can be
bothered - they often have the same jobs).
Over time your CV will have landed at most of the agencies, and then,
even if they knock you back for a role, they MAY call you if they think
you are a match for a role sometime later (this only happens when there
is lots of work around).
Lots of agencies do some kind of search across their records to find
possible applicants, so it is important to have all the necessary buzz
words in your CV (not your letter of application which is often
ignored). So make sure that somewhere in your document you include
names of products you have used to developed documents (Microsoft,
Frame, XML etc), names of software systems you have documented (various
ERP systems, document management systems, etc) and the document types
you have produced (on-line, paper, procedures, processes, systems
manuals, training guides etc). =20
Then sit back and wait.
Another successful avenue is to land a job with one of the consultancies
and start working with them as an underpaid junior. You will get
invaluable experience this way that will set you up for life. Ask this
list for names of consultancies in your home town that may be worth
approaching.=20

Subject: atw: Melbourne agencies/contacts
Hi
I'm new to this forum and have just embarked upon a
major seachange into a new career in writing/editing.
I'm interested in advice on the best tech writing
agencies to contact re work opportunities, together
with details of other societies/meetings that may be
useful for networking and learning more about the
trade (or is it a profession?!).=20
It seems that the Vic arm of the STC would be
worthwhile, based on my review of some of the
archives. =20
Thanks for your help.
