The books had not been written when I moved across to 2007 - I was the
guinea pig!  I used MSDN a lot and found some good technical
information there. What books yet explain creating your own ribbon? I
maintain many dozens of templates each with macros and toolbars -
adding a new macro to a toolbar took (almost) no time, to convert them
all to ribbons is astonomical.
Books told me how to apply themes but at the time I wanted them there
was none that explained how I could create my own themes with my
corporate colours.

Existing ones are compatible, yes. When you attempt to modify a style
that is numbered (eg headings), - that is, choose Styles Pane, select
style, select Modify, select Numbering, you can only choose single
level lists at that point. It's different, and annoying. You can add
new multi level lists from the ribbon, but why have it in two places.
I found it easier to record macros in 2003 to set list numbering, and
change the macros rather than fight the new feature (but that's just
me).

My QAT is getting very long - I reduced it after a while as it adds a
level of drop down that I didn't want.
