<long post>
I reckon I disagree with that - I think you are better off trying to be
prepared, so raise issues where you have heard there might be a problem,
and as the Scouts say, be prepared!
The interface changed dramatically - personally, I like it, but it has
changed! Yes, you need to learn it but you need a good approach, and not
everyone has the luxury of time.
If I had known some things in advance I would have prepared my 2003
templates better before I moved - in particular, some examples are what
happens to toolbars and how multi-level lists are numbered.
I had tons of toolbars with tons of functions. When I opened up my tools
template in 2007, the Addins ribbon went off the screen and I had to
scroll to get to stuff - really annoying. I had the luxury of having a
2003 test machine so I jumped back, re-grouped some of my toolbar
functions into sub-menus, and they were more accessible in 2007. Then I
took the time to work out which ones I really needed.
And I think there is a problem with the timing issue. I thought I was
definitely prepared to learn the new interface. I had set up templates
with macros that had toolbar access to the macros - it took seconds to
set this up (toolbars, not the macros). I expected it might take me a
bit longer than a few seconds to work out how to work with the new
ribbon, but we're talking the wrong order of magnitude - it is not a few
hours to learn to change ribbons - it's weeks. Same with styles - took
me seconds before. Now, with themes and quick style sets it will be
weeks to relearn this stuff. Yes, my old styles still work, and I get
paid to fiddle with templates, but some of these changes are just too
much to justify.
So in the spirit of sharing ...
Things I jump back to 2003 to fix?
- toolbars in old templates
- multi-level lists in old templates
Things I have on the QAT (I think it might be interesting to find out
what different people think is important on the QAT)
- Save, Undo, Redo (I think these come pre-set)
- Show/Hide para markers
- Print..., Print preview, page setup
- Edit Headers/Footers
- Document Properties
- Style name (essential), Styles Pane, Styles inspector
- Compare documents (this works much better in 2007)
- Back (for when I jump around with hyperlinks)
- Insert field, Insert text from file
- (not sure what to call it) the selection list to show final, show with
tracked changes, etc.
- my own macros to swap my File Locations settings (I have test areas)
- toggle page break before
I use the Styles pane now instead of my styles toolbar.
But I still have the following in toolbars in the Add-ins folder that I
use all the time ..
- my own Tables functions on a toolbar
- show/hide spelling and grammar marks
- show/hide bookmarks and highlight fields
Cheers, Margaret
