I raised this topic a while ago, but can't now find my posts in the
archive. In earlier versions of Word, you could do what Peter suggests
and the comment would be displayed as 'balloon help'. However, in later
versions comments are displayed in the right margin with an ugly dotted
line going back to the source point - not an effect I wanted. The use I
had in mind was to provide an explanation (ie expanded form) for an
abbreviation - very similar to what Andrew's after. I tried using a
'dummy' hyperlink, because you can associate a screen tip with any
hyperlink (I think I set the target equal to the source, so clicking
didn't actually take you anywhere). However, for hyperlinks the screen
tip always appends the text 'Click to follow link' or 'Ctrl + click to
follow link' - and I didn't like that either.
I did spend some time trying to implement the solution that Andrew was
after, but think I decided it wasn't going to be possible. I can't now
find records of what I did eventually, but I came up with a rather
clunky solution (though obviously I decided not to implement it in the
end) that displayed the explanation in a dialog box, using a macro
attached to a MACROBUTTON field. The advantage of that was that you
could get the macro to look up the abbreviation in a table. For the
documents I write, all abbreviations are supposed to be listed in a
table near the beginning of the document and I think the macro must have
'read' the abbreviation on which you clicked, looked it up in that
table, retrieved the entry opposite the abbreviation and then displayed
it an a dialog box. (I think the MACROBUTTON actually requires a
double-click to activate it - not sure if you can get round that.)
I realise that's a pretty vague description, but if Andrew or anyone
else is interested I could probably recreate the details.

Andrew, with the word or phrase selected, Insert-->Comment. In my
version of word the phrase gets highlighted, and the comment is
displayed when you hover (not click) on it.

All
Just have a mental blank here!!
I need to know the name of the links that you can add to a word/phrase
in a Word doc (NOT a hyperlink!!) that display a text box/bubble that
details the meaning of the word/phrase when you click it. The text
box/bubble appears beside the word on the same page and does not take
you to a different area.
Details on how to do this would be appreciated too!
Thanks
Andrew
