When I arrived from the Northern Hemisphere, I at first thought I had
encountered some sort of at time warp with the occasional use of such words
as "learnt" and "burnt" but I have long since learned to accept it.
A recent series on ABC television called the "journey of English" explained
that one of the unique things about the Australian version of the language
that are retained from the eighteenth century, and some such words (I can't
remember which) haven't been used in the Old Country for a couple of hundred
years.
Check out page 83 in the current edition of the Australian Style
manual.Youwill discover that both are correct "Usage research shows
that while the -t
spelling is strongly associated with the adjectival use of the word, -ed is
now the majority preference for verbal uses of the past tense and
participle, both active and passive. For example: Bushfires burned out of
control. The entire area had been burned. The air hung heavy with the smell
of burnt gum trees".
So, put that in your participle and burn it.
