Onboarding or on-boarding is widely used in the financial services
industry in the USA and UK (at least) to refer to the process whereby
leads for financial products and services are converted into contracted
customers. For example:

"Bringing new customers on-stream faster generates revenue and profits
sooner, yet procedures for new customer on-boarding are often intensely
manual, paper-driven and plagued by interdepartmental delay. Singularity
has helped securities firms achieve cycle time reductions of up to 80% in
their Customer On-boarding process, eliminating over 60% of manual steps
and increasing throughput capacity without adding staff. And the benefits
of better customer on-boarding extend beyond faster access to revenue:
greater visibility to who is on-boarding when and for which products
results in more cross-selling opportunities and enhanced customer
satisfaction."

Google "customer onboarding" to see the term used in context. Where the
term originated, or why it is used in preference to more traditional ones
- customer registration or setup or whatever - I have no idea.

I also have no idea how far this terminology has spread into other fields,
but I suspect it is only a matter of time before we are told that
CentreLink is improving its customer (i.e. welfare recipient) onboarding
processes :-)
