atw: Re: It's Vs It is

Ohboy can this one start something all over again !!

But my two bob's worth:

1. Almost all of us learn a language as a spoken language
first and writing/reading comes later. Not a lot of babies
read before speaking, for a start.
2. After that, our most common use of language is in speech,
not writing.
3. Abbreviations like "it's" are very very common in spoken
English, (and other spoken languages, for that matter).
4. Familiarity and popularity of use is probably the biggest
factor in determining speed and ease of understanding of
language.
5. Most of us would like to have speed and ease of
understanding as the most important criteria for determining
merit in technical communication, provided accuracy can be
maintained.
6. Go with the flow and rhythm of the spoken language
wherever you can.

The biggest problem most people will have with "it's" will
be the wonder about why the apostrophe is there....

Let loose the dogs of linguistic war!
