I am guessing it is a legacy document.
 
Save as XML, quit Word, reload Word, reload XML document, save as .doc,
retry.

After sitting in front of Word 2000 for the last few years, I am now using
Word 2003, under Windows XP. New Word version, new set of bugs, but this one
is unlike any in my experience.

 

My current opus will need an index. I inserted 73 "XE" fields without a
problem, but attempting to insert field 74 crashes Word. Installing SP 1 did
not solve the problem. Trawling the usual Web sites produced no clues.

 

There must be a solution. Does anyone know a workaround for this?
